My Baby names
Naming children is definitely something that I’ve been thinking about lately because we are currently in discussion about what to name kiddo #2.
But as for kid number one, his first name is a Celtic name meaning “Dark Skinned Warrior” and his middle name means “Vigilant watch”.
As to the how or why….
I’m huge on name meanings. I remember as a little girl browsing through my parents (well used, they had six kids) baby names book and reading through the meanings of each name. My mom wrote songs for each of us kids using the meaning of our names. So the importance of meaning was drilled into my head. I doubt my son will ever be “Dark Skinned” but as the eldest son, I hope he can be a strong loving leader of whatever siblings he may have coming.
My husband is a poet. One of the most important things for him is that a name flows nicely. For example, he has strong opinions against pairing a name ending in a vowel sound with middle name starting with one. There will be no Hannah Elizabeth’s in this family. I’ll have to check out “The Perfect Baby Name” that Adrienne recommended.
We also hoped to have a more unique name, without being joining in the new wave of “unique” names. I know of probably three or four Aidan’s, a plethora of John Paul’s and Maximillian’s or Kolbe’s. So we used the Baby Name Voyager to gauge if our “unique” name was really on an upswing.
Also, another factor that went into name picking is my husband’s 75% Celtic /66% Scottish heritage. His crazy red hair attests to it and it is very fun to have a son with a name that matches his strong heritage.
We agree with Adrienne and refused to tell anyone our baby names ideas because we didn’t want anyone insulting our name choices before our baby was born. This, in addition to not finding out our baby’s sex before birth, really annoyed my parents. (Sorry, Mom!) But we are happy we chose to do this, my side of the family (quietly) raised a few eyebrows when their heard our little boy’s name. They would be a bit more opinionated if he hadn’t been born yet. But once he was named, it would have been insulting the kid to question the name.
I wish I had known how important is is to my mother to name a child after a saint. Apparently, 50+ saints for his middle name wasn’t enough. The first thing my mother did after leaving the hospital was search on the internet for a saint of my son’s name. No luck there, but she did find one very similair and that seemed to be enough. But hey, who knows, my son may be canonized someday. :)
So….
